Welcome to Spartan Science
An introduction by Dean Eric L. Hegg on how Spartans are shaping the future of science

There's never been a more exciting time to be part of the the boundaries of what's possible, fueling innovation, advancing knowledge, and tackling the world's most urgent challenges. This inaugural issue of Spartan Science celebrates that momentum by showcasing the people, ideas, and breakthroughs shaping the future of science.
This magazine celebrates the relentless curiosity, groundbreaking research, and collaborative spirit that define what it means to be a Spartan scientist. Each issue will spotlight the people and discoveries shaping our world—from the classroom to the lab, and from Michigan to the farthest corners of the globe. Through these stories, we aim to connect, inspire, and ignite pride in the Spartan community that fuels our pursuit of scientific excellence.
Our strength as a college comes from the talent, drive, and curiosity of our faculty, students, and alumni — individuals like you who understand the transformative power of scientific research. Whether it's exploring the frontiers of quantum physics, harnessing the power of AI and machine learning to advance research and education, developing climate-resilient crops, uncovering the origins of the solar system, or making discoveries that improve human health, we are creating real impact in Michigan and across the globe.
"What sets this college apart is our ability to turn complex challenges into opportunities dor discovery, impact, and growth." Eric L. Hegg
Dean, College of Natural Science
I am especially excited about the continued growth of interdisciplinary research, expanded opportunities for undergraduate researchers, and the construction of a new facility to support plant and environmental sciences. These investments reflect our long-standing mission to solve real-world problems and prepare the next generation of scientific leaders. To help advance breakthroughs in the sciences, MSU proudly launched “Uncommon Will, Far Better World,” a $4 billion fundraising campaign that reflects our deep commitment to investing in the university's future. This campaign is about supporting the people and places that make world-changing discoveries possible and ensuring that the College of Natural Science continues to lead in research, education, and innovation for years to come.
I'm constantly inspired by the people and discoveries in this community. I hope Spartan Science gives you a sense of that same energy and purpose. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
